and the sky was soft like cloth - words and images celebrating juxtapositions #4

Thank you for joining me here for this quiet little conversation, taking a moment to be with these thoughts, words and images.

cloth palette for 'and the sky was soft like cloth (juxtapositions #4)'

during palette selection for this painting, the soft lavenders and blues drew me in with their subtlety and elegance. the deep blacks calling with their refined textures, and finally the energy and movement in the highly textured greys creating a counterpoint

stitches formed by my sewing machine making a quiet rhythm across the painting, slight gradation changes in each stitch adding another layer of colour and rhythmic motion

Unhurried, the stitches formed by hand nestle next to each other in some places tone on tone in other places forming a quiet but definite contrast against the dark or the light hues on the cloth

I love the many juxtapositions in this painting: the serene upper area against the deeply intriguing area of black and dark charcoals, and this area next to the lighter greys contrasting in colour, value and texture

aoft, elegant, ephemeral, serene, subtle, quiet strength next to energetic movement

And as always, I want to express my gratitude to be living and working on the ancestral & unceded territories of the hən̓̓qəmin̓əm̓ and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh speaking peoples.I honour the incredible depths of grace, courage and perseverance of Indigenous Peoples, and look to them as an example as they find their voices amidst the noise and obfuscation of colonization.

until next time,

Mardell
