landing gently in a new year
Thank you for joining me here for this quiet little conversation, taking a moment to be with these thoughts, words and images.
Now that we've landed in 2023 I'm looking forward to creating new work and supporting existing work out in the world. I'm very thrilled to have three of my earlier paintings represented by the online art gallery artterra, including sea dreams (beaches #6) above. The values and approach of this gallery are a match for my values and I'm so happy to be a part of this experience. I invite you to check out the gallery website - there's a wide range of art there including several lovely paintings by my dear friend Grace Lane-Smith
my studio baskets filled with cloth painted, processed, and folded are softly calling, murmuring of these next three pieces as they speak themselves into being
two groupings, one above and one below, are whispering to me
this week i'll be making a space to gather the cloth and let it show me how it wants to be arranged
i've never choosen multiple palettes all at once before. i'm a little nervous at making this kind of commitment but i'm also feeling a push to try new approaches
since i finished the last of the juxtapositions paintings i've reconfigured my studio space slightly to accommodate my need for visual simplicity. It's a little less convenient but the overall improvement i've noticed in mental clarity is well worth it.
And as always, I want to express my gratitude to be living and working on the ancestral & unceded territories of the hən̓̓qəmin̓əm̓ and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh speaking peoples.I honour the incredible depths of grace, courage and perseverance of Indigenous Peoples, and look to them as an example as they find their voices amidst the noise and obfuscation of colonization.
until next time,
Mardell
