making choices - leaving space for coalescing
Welcome and thank you for being here today, I am so grateful you are choosing to spend some of your precious moments with these thoughts, words and images.
pulling out a few hundred pieces of cloth from the studio baskets
letting the hand be pulled towards colours and textures letting the mind hold the idea of liminal what does it feel like in the space in between
paying attention to the sensations generated by colour by texture by degree of lightness by degree of darkness
texture light movement
setting aside the urge to action choosing to let the information in these pieces of cloth marinate no rush to set up the design wall and the sewing machine
sitting down with watercolour paints brushes and paper options beginning to coalesce knowing what the brush creates on the paper is always different than what ends up on the wall in cloth
liking those suggestions of light connecting through each of the three paintings
standing each on their own yet also in dialogue transits across the surfaces reaching towards their sibling paintings each whole in their own expression
And as always, I want to express my gratitude to be living and working on the ancestral & unceded territories of the hən̓̓qəmin̓əm̓ and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh speaking peoples.I honour the incredible depths of grace, courage and perseverance of Indigenous Peoples, and look to them as an example as they find their voices amidst the noise and obfuscation of colonization.
until next time,
Mardell
